Nous approchons de l’Ile Herschel, notre HPA est 17h30 aujourd’hui. Nous avons eu Silent Sound en VHF ce matin, ils sont a 6 milles de nous plus a terre, en route egalement sur Herschel. Nous avons un tres beau temps, ciel bleu mais un vent trop faible. L’eau de mer est a 0.5 degres, gla gla, mais avec le soleil Patrick se fait une petite bronzette sur le pont. Position a 11h00 TU-8 69 46.1N 140 02.4W A+ Thierry

We are approaching Herschel Island, our ETA is 05:30pm today. This morning we had a vhf contact with Silent Sound, they are at 6 milles of us, closer to the shore than us, going to Herschel too. We have a very fair weather, blue sky but too much gentle wind. Sea water temperature is 0.5 celcius,brrr, but with the sun Patrick is bronzing on the deck. Nous avons quitte Kaktovik a 17h45LT en route vers l’ile Herschell. Une heure apres notre depart nous avons vu deux ours sur un hummock, ils quitterent leur glacon a notre approche. Nous avons pris des photos. Nous sommes tres heureux de notre escale a Kaktovik, merci Randy, les gens sont vraiment tops au sommet du monde, partout en Alaska. Vous pouvez y venir pour voir! Barter Island est une petite ile de 2.6km2 elevee de 11m seulement, elle compte 250 habitants. Il y a deux magasins, un avion quotidien. On y chasse, capture des baleines et on peche principalement des ombles arctiques et du hareng du pacifique. Nous rencontrons quelques floes et hummocks mais la navigation est tranquille. A+ Thierry

We left Kaktovik at 17:45pm, sailing to Herschell Island. One hour after departure we saw two polar bears on an hummock, they went swimming as we approach, we took pictures. We enjoy our stop in Barter Island, thank you Randy, people are really top on the top of the world, everywhere in Alaska. You can come here and see. Barter Island is a little Island of 1.0 sq mi and only 36 feet high with 250 unhabitants. There are two stores, one plane a day. People are hunting, whaling and fishing mainly arctic char and pacific herings. We see a few floes and hummocks, sailing is quiet. Bye Thierry

Hier fut une belle journee, nous avons mouille l’ancre devant Kaktovik a 17h30LT et sommes rapidement alles a terre.

Nous avons pris une douche dans l’hotel de Randy, pris les cartes de glace et la meteo sur le web puis il nous a reconduit en voiture a bord.

En route il est passe par le bout de piste de l’aeroport pres de la lagune. Un ours polaire était en train de manger tranquillement les restes d’une baleine. Nous avons pris des photos et pu le filmer de tres pres, c’était fantastique.

Apres cela Randy et Clarke sont venus a bord voir le bateau et deguster le special tea d’Aline. Je ne traduis pas la suite : good stuff !

Nous avons rendez-vous demain matin a l’hotel pour le petit dejeuner puis Randy devrait nous conduire dans l’ile a la recherche des caribous.

Nous appareillerons vers l’ile Herschell le 26 au soir.

Yesterday was a great day, when we drop anchor at Kaktovik it was 17:30pm. We went ashore quickly.

We had a shower at Randy’s hotel, took ice charts and weather forecast on wifi then Randy drove us to Baloum Gwen.

On the way he went to the end of the air strip near the lagoon. A polar bear was eating up quietly the scraps of a whale. We took pictures and moovies very close of him, it was fantastic.

After that Randy and Clarke came on board to see our ship and drink an Aline special tea (good stuff like someone told us…).

We’ll go to Randy’s hotel tomorrow morning for breakfast then Randy will drive us in the island looking for cariboos.

We’ll leave Kaktovik on 26th evening heading to Herschell Island.

Nous approchons de Kaktovik, il nous reste 20 milles a parcourir. Le vent est aux abonnes absents, pas un souffle depuis 8 heures ce matin et toujours ce sacre courant contraire, environ 1 nd qui porte a l’W depuis Barrow mais nous sommes plus entetes que lui. Notre position a 11h00tu-8 est 70 15.7N 144 45.0W, moteur en marche depuis 08h00, nous ne l’avons utilise que 3 heures depuis Barrow. Nous reservons notre diesel pour la glace. Nous sommes dans le N de Camden Bay, la visibilite est excellente et nous voyons les Romanzof Mountains a 40 milles dans le S. Nous ne prendrons pas une biere, pas une derniere Alaskan Amber a Kaktovik, le village est sec comme toutes les villes du grand nord. Toutes les villes depuis Nome la derniere “humide” jusqu’au Groenland. La vie est belle tout de meme, nous ferons avec et resterons egalement secs! A+ Thierry

We are nearly arrived at Kaktovik, it’s remains about 20 milles to sail. The wind is in holidays, nothing from 3 hours and always a bloody current against us, about 1 knot wesward from Barrow but we are more stubborn than it. Our position at 11:00am utc-8 is 70 15.7N 144 45.0W, engine running for 08:00am, we used it only 3 hours from Barrow. We keep our diesel for the ice. We are in the N of Camden Bay, the visibility is good and we see Romanzof mountains 40 milles in the S. We’ll drink any beer, not a last Alaskan Amber in Kaktovik, it’s dry like all towns in the North, all towns from Nome the last wet till Greenland. But life is nice, we’ll do without and keep dry too. We are at position 70,21,1N 145,54,2W Saturday the 25th of July 09 nearly midnight…check this out under www.googleearth.com

We are in the middle of the Beaufort sea…no pack ice since a few days…must be more in the North…Better like this as the other day, we bashed into the pack-ice on the 22 of July at 1 o’clock morning time at 71,33,6N 155,38,8W…due to real bad visibility…what a bloody noise “Boummm” which woke me up in less then a second…everyone, the sailboat was just fine…no worries, guys!

We are for a few days very often confronted to such bad visibility due to some nasty fog…you never know what’s behind…:-) we need to me evenmore cautious…that why we are shifting every 4 hours…as we are now 5…I am doing 2 shits in one day: 1 from 6 to 10 then the other from 18 to 22…both with Arielle for 2 hours then with skipper Thierry 2hours…in between sleep sleep sleep…or prepare food (beacon, salade “folle”…)…each one of us is a good “chef”…mium mium…a new 3 stars restaurant is born in the Arctic

Heading for Barter Island…doing lots of zigzaging to reach this destination… takes time…that’s also the difficult aspect of this crossing…having to fight against bad winds…we should arrive tomorrow midday…

Vous m’avez posé une série de questions “chocs”, voici mes réponses directes, sans détour afin que vous compreniez mieux notre aventure de tous les jours
Y-at’il des douches à bord du voilier? Non, le Baloum Gwen n’en dispose pas…D’ailleurs, nous sommes restreints par la quantité d’eau à utiliser sur une période de 3 mois: litres. Il y a un lavabo…pour se brosser les dents quand on y pense Nous comptons sur les escales pour avec chance prendre une douche…et respirer enfin la “fraîcheur divine”
Quid, des toilettes? Oui, il y en a une avec un sytème de rejet d’eau avec pompe que nous devons actionner pour que la saleté soit évacuée…Je n’utilise plus ce mécanisme depuis 1 mois pour 2 raisons: 1. il faut se mettre dans des positions qui relèvent de “l’acrobatie olympique” et ce en fonction de l’inclinaison du voilier…olèèèè, merde…çà part ailleurs que dans le WC :-)…2. dès une de mes premières utilisations, le WC a rejeté toute l’eau dehors…bref, le bordel :-)…Donc, place au naturel: je sors de mon lit et me rend a l’extérieur…là, mon “engin” prend l’air, respire, admire la nature et tente sous les 3 degrés C d’avoir le plus long jet…je me transforme en un “Mannekenpiss de l’Arctique”…sinon, pour ce qui concerne l’”autre évacuation”…fastoche: position grenouille à l’arrière du voilier, cu à l’air et plouffff…les poissons dégustent…Bienvenue dans le monde réel de l’éxpédition …maintenant, vous savez comment cela peux être….si vous avez ainsi d’autres questions, envoyez les sur le blog du site et j’y répondrai dès que je peux…

Le vent est toujours d’ENE mais de seulement 13 nds ce matin. La mer est libre de glace mais nous nous rapprocherons de terre avant Kaktovik, avec les vents de NE la glace a gagne dans le S, inutile d’aller se mettre dedans. Position a 11h00 TU-8 70 41.5N 147 27.9W 4.3nds au 120. Nous sommes a 80 milles de Kaktovik. Tout l’equipage dort sauf Aline qui prepare le repas de ce midi, veinards! A+ Thierry

Wind is always ENE but only 13 knots this morning. The sea is free of ice but will go close to the shore before Barter Island, with NE winds the ice win in the south, it’s not usefull to get in. Position at 11:00am tu-8 70 41.5N 147 27.9W Speed 4.3kts Course 120. We are at 80 milles from Kaktovik. All the crew is sleeping except Aline who is cooking for lunch, happy crew! Bye Thierry

Nous faisons route directe sur Kaktovik avec un bon vent d’ENE 19 kts. Ce matin nous avons vu le brise glace Canadien Sir Wilfried Laurier qui fait route a l’E. Nous avons un peu parle avec lui en VHF, il nous a confirme la presence de glace a partir de l’ile Barter. Notre position a 11h00 tu-8 est 71 05.2N 151 12.0W route fond 120 vitesse 5.2nds. Nous naviguons en eau libre. A+ Thierry

We are heading Straight on to Kaktovik with a good wind ENE 19 kts. This morning we saw a Canadian ice breaker, the Sir Wilfried Laurier heading to the E. We spoke a while with him on VHF, he confirmed us there is ice in the East from Barter Island. Our position at 11:00am utc-8 is 71 05.2N 151 12.0W course 120 speed 5.2 kts. Sailing in free waters. Nous avons tire des bords hier jusqu’au milieu de la nuit. La glace n’est pas loin dans le nord et nous avons vu un autre pack, fait principalement de grosses cretes de compression par 71 32N 155 33W. Nous faisons maintenant presque route directe sur Kaktovik, c’est bien. Nous voyons pas mal de bois flotte en derive, venant du fleuve Mackensie. La temperature est plus basse qu’a Barrow, 2 degres la nuit derniere. Notre position a 1100 tu-8 est 71 26.1N 1544 30.9W route au 123 vitesse 4.8nds, vent NE 27 nds. A+ Thierry

We sail against the wind yesterday till the middle of the night. The ice pack is close to the North and we saw another one, mainly bigs hummocks by 71 32N 155 33W. Now we are heading nearly straight on to Kaktovik, it’s good. We see many floating woods drifting and coming from Mackensie river. The temperature is colder than in Barrow, 2 degrees celcius last night. Our position at 11:00am LT is 71 26.1N 154 30.9W course and speed 123 at 4.8 kts, wind NE 27 kts. Bye Thierry

Nous avons quitte Barrow a 12h20 TU-8, nous faisons route sur Kaktovik, un village qui se situe sur Barter Island. Hier soir nous avons dine a bord de Silent Sound, ce fut une tres bonne soiree en compagnie de Cameron, Tobias et Hanns. A minuit nous avons chante happy birthday to you a Arielle dont c’etait l’anniversaire. Aline lui a offert un livre qu’elle a trouve a Nome, “The Spoilers”, Arielle etait tres contente car elle le cherchait depuis longtemps. Ce livre raconte l’histoire d’hommes malhonnetes ayant sevi a Nome durant la ruee vers l’or. Nous avons actuellement un vent d’E 23 nds et nous tirons un premier bord au 010°. A+ Thierry

We left Barrow at 12:20am bounding to Kaktovik on Barter Island (we’ll try). Yesterday evening we took diner on Silent Sound, very nice time on with Cameron, Tobias and Hanns, we enjoy ourselves. At midnight it was Arielle’s birthday, we song her happy birthday to you and Aline gave her a book she found in Nome, Arielle was very happy because she was looking for it a long time ago. The tittle is “The Spoilers”, it’s the story of men in Nome during the gold rush. Now the wind is East 23 kts, we are heading 010° for the moment. Bye Thierry

Hi hi there, Yes, we are still at the Top of the world as they call it here in the US. The winds are so bad to depart to Barter Island, coming from the East…against us! Ideally, we would rather need winds from West but not from the East…we could give a try tomorrow…we need to move ahead… to see other Arctic breathtaking sceneries Sometimes, sailors do prefer to wait for good winds in order to achieve then more nautical miles instead of loosing time zigzaging & not moving at all…This will depends too on ice charts & winds forecast for the next days…we are very lucky to have Patrick from France which is sending us on regular basis updated info…the forecast for the next days are not what expected: winds from East!!!
