Le second Passage est fait pour Baloum Gwen. Si Wikipedia est exacte Baloum serait le troisieme voilier a l’avoir realise deux fois. Les instructions nautiques Canadiennes disent que le passage commence au detroit de Davis et a la baie de Baffin et se termine au detroit de Bering. Ce n’est pas tres precis pour la partie Est. Je pense que cela vient du fait que quand vous le faites vers l’ouest vous etes tot dans la saison dans le detroit de Davis et la baie de Baffin, il y a donc plus de glace. Vous rencontrez rapidement un premier pack derivant depuis la cote est du groenland au niveau du cap Farewell et qui remonte le long de la cote ouest. Un autre pack tout le long de l’est de l’ile de Baffin jusqu’à plus de la moitie de detroit de Davis. Apres cela il y a les icebergs et du pack depuis Upernavik jusqu’au cap York, vous devez remonter nord en baie de Melville avant de pouvoir faire route vers le detroit de Lancaster. Aussi si vous allez vers l’ouest le passage commence au cap Farewell. Mais quand vous etes sur la fin de votre passage vers l’est vous arrivez en baie Baffin a la fin de l’été, la glace de mer a donc fondu et les difficultes ne sont plus les memes. Je considere que le passage fut reussi quand nous sommes arrives a Pond Inlet. Nous avons eu un tres bon passage, avec une tres bonne equipe, nous 0D nous sommes arretes de nombreuses fois, des fois pour le plaisir, visiter et dormir, d’autres en attente a cause de la glace. Nous avons rencontre beaucoup de personnes, toujours pretes a aider, c’était vraiment super, nous n’oublierons jamais l’accueil que nous avons pu trouver. Maintenant je vais preparer Baloum Gwen pour son hiver, il fera tres froid ici. Je suis passe au chantier ce matin, pas de probleme pour qu’ils mettent le Baloum a terre dans le chantier. La mise a terre est prevue Lundi. Je pourrai bientôt reserver mon billet d’avion pour rentrer a la maison, j’ai hate de retrouver ma famille et de pouvoir rester tranquille un moment devant mon feu de bois. A+ Thierry

The second NW Passage is done for Baloum Gwen. If Wikipedia is right, Baloum Gwen is the third sailing ship to sail the passage twice. The Canadian Sailing Directions tell the passage begins at Davis Strait and Baffin Bay and finish at Bering Strait. It’s not really precise for the east part. I think it’s because when you sail the passage westward you are soon in the season in Davis strait and Baffin bay, so there is a lot of ice. You meet soon a drifting ice pack in area of cape Farewell coming from the East coast of Greenland and going to north along the W coast. Another ice pack all along the east of Baffin Island till more than the middle of Davis

strait. Afterthat there are icebergs and ice pack from Upernavik till cape York, you are obliged to go north in Melville bay and sail to Lancaster strait after Cape York. So if you are westward the passage begins at Cape Farewell. But when you are at the end of your passage Eastward you arrive in Baffin Bay at the end of the summer so sea ice has melt and it’s not the same difficulty. I consider the passage was realized when we were at Pond Inlet. We have had a very good passage, we stopped many times, sometimes for pleasure and sleep, sometimes waiting for the ice. We met a lot of people, everytime helpfull, it was really super, we’ll never forget how we were welcome. Now I’ll prepare Baloum Gwen for winter time, It will be very cold here. I went to the shipyard this morning. No problem to put Baloum aground in the yard. They will do it on Monday. Soon I’ll can reserve my air ticket to go back home. We are without news from the little Patrick READER from September 5th. He left Pond Inlet alone. Description: dressed with a grey short, big shoes and a blue parka. He has hairy legs. He carries with him two big travel bags and a back bag. He is always with his doudou, a little plush lamb. Hier nous sommes lles sur l’ile Bylot avec le Baloum. Il y a des vues superbes. Aline a fait un peu de luge avec l’une des defenses plates du Baloum, ca ne glissait pas assez a son gout mais trop pour nos chaussures… Aujourd’hui tous les magasins sont fermes, nous en profitons pour rester tranquilles. Nous avons quelques 570 milles a faire jusqu’a Aasiaat (nom Danois Egedesminde) dans le sud de la baie de Disko. A+ Thierry

Yesterday we went on Bylot Island with Baloum. We walked and had a picknik on. View was superb. Aline made a little sled with a flat fender of Baloum Gwen, it was not enough slippery for the sled but too much for our shoes… Today all stores are closed here, we profite of this to remain quiet. We have somithing like 570 milles to sail to Aasiaat (Danish name Egedesminde) in the south of Disko bay. Bye Thierry

Nous sommes arrives au mouillage a Pond Inlet hier soir a 17:00. Le brise glace canadien Henri Larsen est a l’ancre. Patrick etait presse de trouver un avion pour rejoindre la Belgique, il a prepare ses bagages toute la journee, ce n’etait pas rien. Deux enormes sacs bourres de vetements, livres et meme des echantillons de sable ramasse sur les plages pour un ami… Il a saute aussi vite qu’il le pouvait dans le dinghy et a trouve une voiture pour le conduire a l’aeroport. Manque de chance la voiture de Ronald s’est enlisee dans le sable de la plage. Il n’a pas ete facile de l’en sortir, nous y sommes arrives avec l’aide d’un 4×4. Silent Sound est arrive ici ce matin, ils dorment pour le moment. Nous sommes dans la salle de restaurant de l’hotel. Il neige dehors a gros flocons. L’heure locale est gmt-4, la coop sera ouverte a 13h00. A+ Thierry

We arrived at anchor at Pond Inlet yesterday evening at 05:00 pm utc-6. The Canadian ice breaker Henri Larsen is at anchor. Patrick was in a hurry to find a plane for Belgium, he had prepared his luggages all the day, it was a big deal. Two enormous bags full of clothes, books, even sand samples taken on beaches for a friend… He jumped as fast as he could in the dinghy and found a car to drive him to the airport. Unfortunatly Ronald’s car stucked on the beach, in the sand. It was not easy to put it off, we arrived with the help of a four wheel. Silent Sound arrived here this morning. They are sleeping for the moment. We are in the hotel restaurant, it falls snow. Time here is utc-4, the coop we’ll be open at 01:00pm. Bye Thierry

Nous avons quitte le detroit de Lancaster et sommes entres dans le Navy Board hier soir, en passant Bluff Head et l’ile Adam nous etions a 8.6nds. Depuis hier nous rencontrons des icebergs, le Navy Board est superbe avec ses montagnes et ses glaciers. La nuit derniere j’ai pris une photo du ciel, juste apres minuit, il avait plusieurs differentes couleurs, gris, noir, bleu, orange, je la mettrai sur le site. Apres Navy Board nous entrerons dans Eclipse Sound puis le Pond Inlet (qui est un detroit). Le village porte le meme nom. Nous sommes maintenant a 50 milles de Pond et marchons 6.5 nœuds avec un bon petit vent. Il y a une demie heure nous avons eu une averse de neige humide. Nous faisons une veille attentive, il y a des narvals, des belougas et des baleines dans les parages. Notre position a 09h00 est 72 58.3N 80 14.7W, HPA (heure prevue d’arrivee) Pond 18h00. Arielle et Patrick debarqueront a Pond Inlet, comme prevu ils doivent nous quitter pour reprendre le travail. Le voyage touche a sa fin, la bonne equipe commence a se disloquer. A+ Thierry

From yesterday icebergs are presents, Navy Board is superb with mountains and glaciers. During the night I took a picture of the sky, just after midnight, there was many different colors , grey, black, blue, orange, I’ll put it on the web site. After Navy Board we’ll be in Eclipse Sound then in Pond Inlet (Strait). The village has the same name than the strait. We are now at 50 nm from Pond sailing at 6.5 kts with a gentle wind. Half an hour ago we have had a snow shower, wet snow. We keep a sharp lookout, there are narwhals, belougas and whales in this area. Our position at 09:00am is 72 58.3N 80 14.7W, ETA Pond 06pm. Arielle and Patrick will disembark in Pond, they must leave because their jobs. The voyage is nearly ended, the good team begins to break. Bye Thierry
