Le vent n’est pas avec nous, trop faible, debout ou les deux. Aussi avons nous mouille a minuit dans Fearnall Bay par 72 25.1N 93 30.2W. Baloum a roule toute la nuit avec la houle dans cette baie ouverte. A cause du vent nous n’irons pas a l’ile Beechey mais directement sur Pond Inlet, c’est vraiment plus court. Le temps est brumeux, nous avons l’impression d’etre en Manche. La temperature de la mer est de 2 degC et l’air a 3deg. Nous avons appareille a 10h00, notre position a 11h00 est 72 24.9N 93 25.5W, vitesse 2.6nds route au 100. A+ Thierry

The wind is not with us, too light, against or both. So we anchored at midnight in Fearnall Bay by 72 25.1N 93 30.2W. Baloum was rolling all the night with the swell in that open bay. Because the wind we’ll not go to Beechey Island but directly to Pond Inlet, it’s really shorter. Weather is foggy, we feel to be in the Channel. Sea water temperature is 36 degF and the air at 38. We sailed at 10:00am, our posn at 11:00 is 72 24.9N 93 25.5W speed 2.6kts course 100. Bye Thierry

Nous avons quitte Fort Ross tardivement, a 12h30. Ce matin Polar Bound est arrive en provenance d’Illulissat au Groenland. David est seul a bord de son bateau a moteur de 15m. Il fait route a l’ouest pour la troisieme fois dans le passage et se dirige vers l’Antartique en passant par Midway. Bonne route David. Nous avons fait bonne peche aussi lui avons-nous donne trois ombles arctiques et laisse trois pour Silent Sound dans la cabane. Pas d’autres ours polaires aujourd’hui… La cabane et ses alentours sont emouvants, il y a un livre d’or sur lequel nous avons vu trace de plusieurs bateaux, Nuage de Michele DEMAY, Ocean Search d’Olivier PITRAS etc. Nous y avons inscrit le passage de Baloum Gwen. Un ours a mordu le tuyau en caoutchouc d’alimentation du poele a l’exterieur le fut était par terre ainsi que le poele a l’interieur. Fort Ross est un bon endroit d’hivernage, bien abrite avec beaucoup de caribous, bœufs musques, ours polaires, phoques et ombles artiques. Nous faisons route vers l’ile Beechey dans le NE du detroit de Lancaster avant d’aller sur Pond Inlet. Le vent était au nord la nuit derniere mais il est ESE 15 nds maintenant. Notre position a 14h30 est 71 56.2N 94 00.5W, vitesse 5.0Kts. A+ Thierry

We left late Fort Ross, at 12:30pm. This morning Polar Bound arrived coming from Illulissat in Greenland. David is alone on his 48feet motor boat. He is going westward for the third time in the NW passage and bounding to Antartica via Midway. Good sail David. We made good fishing so we gave him three arctic chars and we left three others for Silent Sound in the cabin. No more polar bears today… The cabin and around is mooving, there is a gold book on which we saw the tracks of several ships, Nuage of Michele DEMAY, Ocean Search of Olivier PITRAS. We wrote on a little text for Baloum Gwen. A bear has bitten the rubber diesel hose of the stove out side, diesel drum was down and the stove too in the cabin. Fort Ross is a good place for wintering, good shelter and many cariboos, musked oxes, polar bears, seals and arctic chars. We are heading to Beechey Island in the NE of Lancaster strait before Pond Inlet. The wind was from N last night but it’s ESE 15 kts now. Nous avons mouille a Fort Ross dans l’Est du detroit de Bellot hier a 18h00. Nous n’avons eu que quelques floes dans le detroit. Nous avons suivi un moment un ours polaire qui nageait, il a plonge sous un floe, grimpe sur un autre. Nous avons pris de belles photos et films puis nous l’avons laisse tranquille. Fort Ross est un ancien poste de la compagnie de la baie d’Hudson, abandonne a cause des conditions de glace difficiles. La cabane est en bon etat, elle est utilisee quelquefois l’ete par des scientifiques. Nous avons achete un livre a Cambridge Bay, bien ecrit par un homme qui travaillat toute sa vie pour la Cie. Il a travaille ici. Il est tres interessant, il parle de l’ancienne et de l’actuelle facon de vivre des locaux. We anchored at Fort Ross in the East of Bellot Strait yesterday 06:00pm. We meet only few floes in the strait. We follow a while a polar bear swiming, at a time he dived under a floe, jumped on another. We took good pictures and movies and left him quiet. Fort Ross is a former Hudson’s Bay Cie’s post abandonned because difficult ice conditions. The caban remains in good state used sometime by scientists in summer time. We bought a book in Cambay, well written by a man who has worked all his life for the cie. He worked here. It is really interesting, he speaks about the old and actual way of life of the locals. Desole, je suis en retard, nous avons eu de la glace toute la nuit et ca continue. Nous avons vu un ours polaire dormant sur un floe. Nous sommes maintenant a 13h30 a 5 milles de l’entree W du detroit de Bellot, nous allons y entrer directement, c’est la bonne heure pour la maree, le courant peut monter a 8 nds dedans. A+ Thierry

Sry I am late, we have had ice floes now and all the night. We saw a polar bear sleeping on a floe. We are now at 01:30pm 5 nm from the W entrance on Bellot Strait, we go in directly, it’s the good time for tide, current can reach 8 knots inside. Bye Thierry

Pas de vent hier soir, aussi avons nous mouille a la pointe Matheson dans le NE de l’ile du roi Guillaume. Nous avons fait bonne peche, 3 belles ombles arctiques et 6 autres poissons. Nous avons appareille a 10h00 avec un leger vent d’WNW, notre vitesse est seulement de 2.9 nds. Nous mangerons du bon poisson aujourd’hui et essaierons d’en fumer avec du the du labrador que j’avais garde dans ce but. Posn a 12h00 68 59.2N 95 02.6W, tres beau temps. A+ Thierry

We left at 10am with a light wind from WNW, our speed is only 2.9 kts. We’ll eat good fish today and try to smoke a part with labrador tea I kept for this. Nous avons quitte Gjoa Haven ce matin a 11h00. Dans le Nord Ouest de l’ile du roi Guillaume nous franchirons le detroit de James Ross puis le Larsen Sound. Apres le detroit de Bellot nous nous arreterons quelques heures a Fort Ross. Un paquebot est arrive a Gjoa ce matin, il nous a dit que le detroit de Bellot etait maintenant libre de glaces, c’est une bonne nouvelle. L’an dernier Baloum avait fait Resolute Gjoa en passant par Peel Sound aussi je prefere cette fois ci emprunter Bellot puis le detroit du prince regent. Hier nous sommes alles sur le cote ouest de la baie la ou Amundsen avait construit une cabane sur une petite colline. C’etait un laboratoire qui fut utilise pour prendre differentes mesures du champs magnetique terrestre, sa direction et les forces horizontales et verticales du champs (declinaison et inclinaison). Il ne reste rien de leur passage, aujourd hui a cet endroit il n’y a qu un bloc de ciment commemoratif ainsi que trois epaves de bateaux en bois plus recents. Le temps est tres beau, ciel bleu et pas de vent. Ce matin l’eau de mer etait gelee dans le fond de notre dinghy. La meteo prevoyait moins 4 dans le Larsen Sound la nuit derniere. L’hiver viendra rapidement ici maintenant, la mer sera gelee dans un mois et demi. A+ Thierry

We left Gjoa Haven this morning at 11:00pm. In the North West of King William Island we’ll pass through James Ross Strait then in Larsen Sound. After Bellot Strait we’ll stop few hours at Fort Ross. A passenger ship arrived at Gjoa this morning told us Bellot Strait is now free of ice, good new. Last year Baloum sailed from Resolute to Gjoa by Peel Sound so I prefer to take Bellot strait and Prince Regent Inlet this time. Yesterday we went on the west coast of the bay where Amundsen built a caban on a little hill, it was the laboratoty to take different measures of the earth magnetic field, direction, horizontal and vertical force of the field. It remains nothing of the expedition, today in this place there is only a commemorative cement block and three wood ships wrecks but more recent. Weather is very fair today, blue sky but no wind. This morning sea water in our dinghy was frozen. On the weather forecast they gave 22 deg F in Larsen Sound last night, winter will come soon here, all the sea will be iced in one and a half month. Hi there, What’s up folks? Final leg starting in 2 hours, heading Pond Inlet via Lancaster Sound…perhaps Fort Ross depending on ice concentration. Yesterday, lovely day here in town: meeting a classroom from the school (lots of fun with pupils & teacher), seeing locals, small hike, food with the guys from Silent Sound (see previous breaking news). Morning, sun is appearing among the fog…it has been freezing during the night…winds seems to be so light….
