We are in Gjoa Haven in the Canadian Big North. Weather is lovely during day time, quite cold during the night…starting to freeze & having light snow! Nous sommes à Gjoa Haven dans le Grand Nord canadien. Le temps est splendide durant la journée, la nuit fort froid….il commence à geler et quelques flocons de neige!

We should be leaving tomorrow for Lancaster Sound & could be confronted to some ice-pack - forecast of 20% of ice coverage depending on spots, winds… Nous devrions quitter demain Gjoa Haven pour le Lancaster Sound et être sans doute confronté à la banquise - prévision de 20% de glace dépendant des endroits, vents…

Nous sommes a Gjoa Haven, nous partirons demain matin quand nous nous reveillerons. Ocean Watch lui est parti ce matin pour Pond Inlet, ils essaieront de passer par le detroit de Bellot si possible et nous donneront des informations sur la glace. Ocean Watch continue son voyage tout autour des Ameriques, parti de Seattle ils y reviendront apres avoir fait le passage du Nord Ouest et le Cap Horn. Bon voyage Mark et a l’equipage, nous resterons en contact par e mails.

Gjoa Haven est une ville de 1100 habitants. Le nom Inuit, Ursuqtuq, signifie ou il y a beaucoup de graisse (pour les lampes). Dans une baie tres bien abritee Roald Amundsen restat ici les deux hivers 1903 1904 , il fut le premier a reussir le passage du NW apres un autre hiver passe dans l’Est de l’ile Herschell. Les gens d’ici nous ont dit qu’il y a beaucoup d’ours polaire un peu plus nord mais ici ce sont principalement des grizzlis maintenant. C’est un tres bon endroit pour la peche aux ombles arctiques. We are in Gjoa Haven, we’ll leave tomorrow morning when we’ll wake up. Ocean Watch sailed this morning bounding to Pond Inlet, they will try to go through Bellot Strait if possible and send us ice informations. Ocean Watch continue her voyage all around Americas, started in Seattle they will come back in the same place after the NW passage and Cape =0 AHorn. Good sailing Mark and crew, we’ll keep in touch by e-mails.

Gjoa Haven is a town on King William Island, there is about 1100 unhabitants. The inuit name of the town, Ursuqtuq, means where there is a lot of grease . In a very good sheltered bay Roald Amundsen stayed here two winters in 1903 1904, he was the first to make the North West passage after another winter spent in the East of Herschell Island. People here told us there are a lot of polar bears a little bit more north but here mainly grizzlis now. It’s a good fishing place for arctic chars. Bye Thierry

Nous sommes arrives a Gjoa Haven hier soir a 23h45. Ce matin nous avons ete invites a dejeuner et a visiter le brise glace Canadien Sir Wilfried Laurier. Nous y avons ete tres bien et amicalement recus. Sur le Laurier Bruno, le specialiste des glaces nous a parle de la situation actuelle et future de la glace. Le detroit de Bellot est ferme par un pack de glace de 8 dixiemes dans sa partie ouest. Si nous ne pouvons pas y passer dans quelques jours nous devrons continuer notre route vers le nord apres le Larsen sound par detroit de Peel au lieu du Prince Regent Inlet. Dans l’apres midi nous sommes alles a terre et nous dinerons au restaurant ce soir. Voila une petite histoire vraie, a Cambay Tobias (du Silent Sound) a vu quelqu’un qui venait de tirer un grizzli, en parlant avec lui et essayant d’obtenir de la viande il lui demanda comment cela se cuisine. La reponse fut claire et paraissait tout a fait normale a son interlocuteur, c’est simple, comme de l’ours polaire. A+ Thierry

We arrived in Gjoa Haven yesterday at 11:45 pm. This morning we were both crews of three sail boats anchored here guest for lunch and visit on the Canadian ice breaker Sir Wilfried Laurier. Very nice and friendly time on. On Laurier Bruno, the ice specialist spoke us about the present and future ice situation. Bellot strait is shut by an ice pack 8 tenth in the west part . If it’s not possible to go through in a few days we’ll be obliged to head north after Larsen Sound by Peel Sound instead of Prince Regent Inlet. In the afternoon we went ashore and tonight we’ll go to the restaurant. A little true story, in Cambay Tobias (on Silent Sound) saw a man who has shot a grizzli, speaking with him and trying to obtain meat he asked how they cook it. The answer was clear and appears quite normal for the man, it’s simple, like polar bear. Bye Thierry

Nous sommes arrives tard hier soir pour faire le detroit de Simpson aussi avons nous mouille dans Washington Bay dans le SW de l’ile du roi Guillaume a 03h30 apres avoir passe le Requisite channel et le passage de Storis. Ces passages ont peu de profondeur d’eau et parsemes de petites iles plates. Si plates que nous n’avions pas d’echos radar. Quelques racons (balises radar) ne fonctionnent pas. Il y avait du vent et de la neige, la neige tenait sur le pont, un peu seulement a cause du vent, il y avait des floes en derive au debut du Requisite. Nous avons quitte notre mouillage a 11h15 ce matin apres une bonne nuit. Nous serons a Gjoa ce soir, nous avons maintenant du beau temps ensoleille et unj bon vent NNW 20 nds. Aline nous prepare du grizzli a la chechuan et Gilles nous a fait hier un ragout de caribou, miam miam. Nous venons tout juste de voir les voiles du Silent Sound qui se presente comme nous pour engainer le detroit et l’avons en contact VHF. Posn a 12h00 68 43.2N 98 15.8W A+ Thierry

We arrived too late yesterday night to go through Simpson Strait so we anchored in Washington Bay in the SW of King William Island at 03:30am after Requisite Channel and Storis Passage. Those passages are with shallow waters and several very flats little islands. So flat than we didn’t have targets on radar screen. A few racons (radar beacons) didn’t work. It was windy and snowy, snow remain on the deck, only a few because the wind, some floes drifted at the begining of Requisite. We left anchorage at 11:15 this morning after a good night. We’ll be at Gjoa Haven tonight, we have a nice weather today, sunny with good wind NNW 20 kts. Aline is cooking a chechuan grizzli meat and Gilles made yesterday a cariboo stew, miam. We just saw Silent Sound sails and we have a VHF contact with them Posn at 12:00am 68 43.2N 98 15.8W Bye Thierry

Nous sommes en route vers Gjoa Haven, l’endroit ou Amundsen passat deux hivers avec son navire la Gjoa. A proximite du pole nord magnetique il etudiat le magnetisme terrestre. Il ne laissat rien sur place a part quelques enfants. Nous avons du beau temps, pas de glace, la temperature de l’eau de mer est de 4 deg C. We are going to Gjoa Haven, the place where Amundsen spent 2 winters with his ship Gjoa. Close to the magnetic north pole he studied the terrestrial magnetism. He left nothing there but children yes. We have a fair weather, no ice, sea temperature is 40 deg F. Our position at 09:00am is 68 26.4N 101 38.1W, we just pass Jenny Lind island. Bye Thierry

Nous avons quitte Ikaluktutiak ce matin, en route pour Ursuqtuq (Gjoa Ha ven). Nous avons mange du grizzli hier midi, c’est une tres bonne viande resemblant a du boeuf, tendre avec un gout plus fort. Merci beaucoup Vicky, pour tout, de la part de l’equipage. Dans la soiree Jacques et Greg sont venus a bord, ils sont professeurs a Cambay, ils projettent de construire un voilier pour naviguer vers le sud. Tout va bien a bord, nous avons du fuel, de l’eau potable, de la bonne nourriture et du soleil, nous n’avons pas besoin de plus. Silent Sound appareillera aujourd hui pour Gjoa. La carte des glaces montre toujours une banquise compacte dans le Larsen Sound. Position a 11h00 tu-6 69 02,7N 105 07,5W A+ Thierry

We left Ikaluktutiak this morning at 09:20am bounding to Ursuqtuq (Gjoa Haven). Yesterday noon we ate grizzli bear, it’s a very good meat looking like beef, tender with a stronger taste. Many thanks Vicky for all from Baloum Gwen’s crew. In the evening Jacques and Greg came on board, they are teachers here, they want built a sailing ship to sail south. Everything is ok on board, we have diesel, fresh water, good food and the sun, we need nothing more. Silent Sound will leave today for Gjoa Haven too. The ice chart shows always compact pack in Larsen Sound. Position at 11h00am utc-6 69 02,7N 105 07,5W Bye Thierry

Still in Cambridge Bay…winds forecast aren’t good enough…so departure for today is cancelled & expected for tomorrow morning. We just had a great midday lunch…the weather here is bright with a lovely sun among the clowds…I really don’t know what to say about climate change as we are usually confronted on land to nice weather with I would say nice temperature for such North areas…

It seems (based on the icecharts) there isn’t any ice between here and our next leg Gjoa Haven… on the other hand further North below the Lancaster Sound, we have noticed on the ice charts forecast that the ice coverage is still considerable…

False or correct info=> we have heard 2 sailboat doing the Northwest Passage from East to West (the opposite way to us) were (are still?) stuck in the pack-ice further North where we sould be aiming for in the coming days…if it’s the case, it seems the ice isn’t this year melting so fast?

We will let you know once we arrive in this part of the North…

Hier nous avons ete tres occupes mais le soir nous sommes alles a une reunion a l’office de tourisme avec l’equipage de Silent Sound et Bryan qui representait l’Ocean Watch. Cette reunion etait organisee pour les habitants interesses par notre voyage. Ensuite Vicky nous a conduit jusqu’a l’epave de la Maud. C’est un bateau qui fut construit en 1917 pour Amundsen qui voulait faire les deux passages avec, le passage du Nord Est (par le Nord de la Siberie) et le passage du NW. Il ne les fit pas et vendit le bateau a la compagnie de la Baie d’Hudson. Il fut utilise dans la region et coulat a Iqalukttutiaq en 1930. Elle est dans le bras ouest pres de l’ancienne ville. Vicky et plusieurs personnes vinrent a bord, nous etions 18. Elle nous a donne de la viande de grizzli que nous mangerons sans tarder, super! A+ Thierry

Yesterday we were busy all the day but in the evening we went for a meeting in the visitor center with crews of Silent Sound, Baloum Gwen and Bryan representative of Ocean Watch. There was people of the town interested by our voyage. After that Vicky drove us to the Maud wreck. The Maud is a ship built in 1917 for Amundsen, he would to make both passages, NorthEast passage (N of Siberia) and NW passage with her but he didn’t and sale the ship to the Hudson Bay Company. She was used here and sunk in Cambridge Bay in 1930. She is in the West arm close to the old town. Vicky and several people came on board, we were 18. She gave us grizzli meat, we’ll eat it soon, fantastic! Bye Thierry

Was so great Cambridge Bay. Locals are so friendly an helpful…yesterday evening, we had a Q&A sesssion at the visiting center….organized by Vicky and her team…ths ths ths…you have been so kind….after we invited Vicky, kids, friends and team on board to visit the sailboat and have a pleasant evening all together…..was lovely…..to talk with all of you…..now, leaving for Gjoa…we need to move ahead…cheeeeers guys and keep us posted, patrick
