Hi folks, You are perhaps wondering why we are still in Wainwright, North of Alaska - I would summarize this for 3 reasons: 1. we need to pick up a new crew member at next stop, Barrow on the 16th. Barrow is quite near from Wainwright so no need to go on yet. In fact, we could have been now far away of Barrow if we didn’t have to wait for this date. 2. on the other hand, we need to take into account winds & ice charts. The winds are coming to much from the North & we would prefer South winds to bring us directly to next stops. Forecast charts are announcing South & West winds in the coming days…looks ideal
It seems Ice is drifting from North to the coastline between Barrown & Wainwright, so we must be really cautious…the least!!! Ice charts are indicating ice exposure from 2 to 7 in front of Barrow…not so appropriate for us…we will see in a few days if forecast have changed?? Funny too that internet sites are sometimes announcing different forecast…:-) Globally, the ice around Barrow seems to open up…with South winds, ice could be drifting North…wait & see
3. above all, we like the place so much especially myself. Locals are so friendly offering us a real welcome, interested with what we are doing…& I am so keen to meet them, talk & chat, understand their culture, laugh…walk around this small Inuit village of around 750 inhabitants….
Depending on optimal winds, we could leave on Saturday for Barrow? Hope, I will see the belugas….could be there in a few days…let’s hope before saturday
Tonight, we have a special guest on board…the Young 36 man from Anchorage…We want to prepare him a good meal to thank him for the ride we had yesterday on the beach of Wainwright…really nice & muddyyyyy:-)
He, the picture herein attached is a picture of Roald Amundsen who was the first to cross the Northwest Passage from East (Greenland) to West (Alaska) at the begining of the 20th century…..
